Islamic On-Line and Home-Schooling Resources:

A Brief Overview


We have decided to initiate this project as a means to provide an alternative to both the public school system and the situation here in the United States which does not readily provide access to On-line and Home-schooling educational resources directed towards the Muslim Community. There are not many resources available and the intent here is not to provide another for-profit, dot-com educational experience; but to develop an educational environment which will be appropriate for individuals at all age levels from preschool to post-graduate and which will not have any direct cost associated with its use.

The educational program will have a foundational component which will be concerned primarily with the development of basic Scientific and Educational skills. It will be non-denominational (secular) in nature and will be meant to meet the needs of students from any Religious, Cultural, or Social background. The other components of the program will be devoted to various religious or denominational settings and will be designed to integrate individually within the Foundational Component of the educational process.

Public education here in the United States is failing to provide a good basic education for most of the students attending its schools. Students graduating from Public schools generally do not have the skills necessary to understand the basic grammar and vocabulary of their native language. They likewise, in many cases are incapable of producing communications which are clear, concise and understandable. This then is reflected in their inability to engage in analytical and critical thinking. When these students graduate from college, many of them are having great difficulty finding meaningful employment; this is not just because of the economic situation, but has much more to do with their lack of the basic skills needed to function in a dynamic and increasingly technologically demanding environment.

The political and social agenda of many within the public school system has also caused significant problems because they are not as neutral and apolitical as they would lead us to believe. They do have a political agenda and it is promoted with public monies and supported at all costs by the very people, who stand to gain the most monetarily; they are the people who are employed by our public schools. The prime consideration concerning how the educational environment at the public schools should be run is the employees of the system first, then the convenience of the parent’s work schedules and lastly the education of the students attending those schools. Public education has become a big business with the 'real' success of its students seeming to matter little to those running ‘the system’. This system cannot be repaired; the only solution is to provide alternatives to Public Education and that will be the ‘prime directive’ of this site. It will strive to provide an environment which can encourage and assist students of any age in the attainment of the following foundational skills:      

  • An understanding of the basic principles of Systems Theory, Feedback Loops, and Subsystems.
     
  • A basic understanding of the grammatical and semantic concepts of their native language. The first programs will be developed for English-speakers, but other languages will be added as the site is constructed.
     
  • A basic understanding of the various analytical and critical thinking skills.
     
  • A basic understanding of the difference between Data, Information and Knowledge and their application to finding and validating information whose content is increasing exponentially in our increasingly ‘Digital’ world. Skills relevant to the field of Information Technologies will be absolutely necessary to function now and in the future.
     
  • A basic understanding of the concept of Abstraction and its application to Problem-solving in an environment of Complex Systems.
     
  • The utilization of all of the above skills in the development of a fundamental understanding of Islamic Studies and their application to each student’s life and the development of the practical Technological skills necessary to function in the 21st century.
